The urban and infrastructure development applications mostly deal with the development of Geospatial technology support for Urban Local Bodies for formulation of GIS based urban Plans and tools / Applications for geospatial governance.
High resolution satellite images provide valuable information about the land-use/ land-cover (present and past), existing infrastructure, terrain characteristics etc. Space-based information & geospatial analysis tools also support many applications e.g., Urban and regional planning, Route alignment for road, rail, oil/ gas pipeline, Site suitability analysis for hydroelectric project, new township, Facility & Utility planning for identification of landfill sites, schools, hospitals, etc. and also for Environmental impact assessment.
Preparation of Regional Plans
Regional plan preparation is one of the urban applications using medium and high satellite data. In 1999, regional land use for National Capital Region (NCR) was prepared using IRS LISS III satellite data at 1:50,000 scale which was a major input for preparation of Regional Plan-2021.
National Urban Information System (NUIS)
National Urban Information System (NUIS) is a National Mission initiated by Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) in 2006 for generation of 1:10,000 scale urban geospatial database for 152 towns on thematic content using high resolution satellite data.
AMRUT Cities
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) project initiated by Govt. of India for 500 cities in the year 2015 aims to provide basic services (e.g. water supply, sewerage, urban transport) to households and build amenities in cities.
Monitoring of Pipeline Corridor for GAIL
GAIL India Ltd. maintains 11,900 Km Pipe line infrastructure for Gas Transportation. Regular surveillance of entire Pipeline is mandatory for any physical disturbances over pipeline Right of Usage (ROU) at 30m which is usually done through monthly inspection with helicopters and inspection by walkers every six months.
SMARAC Decision Support System (DSS)
India is a vibrant and culturally diverse country with more than 3600 heritage sites and monuments of national importance, of which 36 are recognized as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. These heritage sites and monuments are precious and non-renewable resources which need to be conserved, protected and monitored.
Urban Growth
Characterization and Monitoring of the urban growth patterns using Multi temporal and multi spectral satellite data. Remote Sensing helps us in understanding and analysing the patterns of urban growth and the causal factors for the sprawl, thus building a GIS based Urban Sprawl model
Web GIS for Electrical Transmission Infrastructure
Maharashtra State Electrical Transmission Corporation Limited (MSETCL) is utilising geospatial services to have an integrated spatial view and analysis of electrical transmission infrastructure: Substations, Transmission Lines and Towers in Maharashtra State.
Geospatial Governance - PMAY Housing for All (Urban)
Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Housing for All (Urban) mission, launched in June 201. Considering complexity of progress monitoring of house construction, MoHUPA and NRSC, ISRO collaboratively implementing the photograph based geo-tagging of every single house, which is being constructed under the ‘Beneficiary led Individual House Construction’ component of the PMAY.
National Health Resources Repository (NHRR)
India’s first ever national healthcare facility registry with authentic, standardized and updated geospatial data of all public and private healthcare establishments. This is being carried out with Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW).
Monitoring of Judicial Infrastructure for MoLJ
This project envisages development of mobile and web application system for hosting and monitoring of Infrastructure facilities for Judiciary in the country. ‘Nyaya Vikas’ – a BHUVAN web portal and mobile app for monitoring of the projects under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for development of infrastructure facilities for District and sub-ordinate judiciary in all states and union territories of the country.
Alignment of Power Lines
Route alignment for power lines is done using IRS LISS III Satellite data to derive the base information on terrain features like topography and slope, current land use, forest/vegetation cover, water bodies/drainage, built-up areas, road, rail, sanctuaries/ national parks which are the major guiding factors for alignment of any infrastructure corridor.
